The Academy of Operational Medicine is accepting applications and nominations for the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Operational Medicine. Ideally, applicants should be academy members in good standing. Applicants’ background, editorial experiences, organizational capabilities, peer management, and scientific capacity to serve in this role will be considered.

As AOM’s official clinical review journal, JOM is designed to meet the unique needs of its members. The goal of JOM is to provide ongoing studies that support advancements in the field of operational medicine and transition research into information members can utilize to improve operator capacity while caring for patients. To do so, JOM focuses on the application of research towards the use of medicine in unconventional, hostile, or austere environments. 

The Editor-in-Chief manages an international Editorial Board of active researchers who ensure that objective, innovative, and rigorously applied research is submitted to the Journal and is made available as soon as possible and in the interest of egalitarian knowledge.

As an expert, the Editor-in-Chief represents a wide variety of general to specific operational medicine knowledge and is an advocate for all. The Editor-in-Chief is fair and has no biases in any of the fields within operational medicine.

The Editor-in-Chief of JOM will be:

  • A fellow of the Academy or eligible for fellowship
  • Committed to JOM’s mission to publish rigorous research from all disciplines within operational medicine.
  • Open to creativity and innovation in the various possibilities and applications within operational medicine
  • Committed to objective scholarly publishing and the dissemination of scientific communications to meet the evolving nature of operational medicine
  •  Serves as an ambassador of goodwill for the Academy of Operational Medicine
  •  Continues to be engaged in research
  •  Collaborates with other scientific journals and academic communities in related fields
  • Open to contributions and ideas that reflect the unique nature of advancement in operational medicine.       

Position Requirements

To ensure an efficient peer review process for our authors, our Editors strive to:

  • Agree to handle all new manuscript assignments per month 
  • Handle each manuscript assignment from the first assessment to a final decision
  • Respond to manuscript submissions (Accept or Decline) within three days
  • Secure at least two reviewers on manuscripts that are suitable for review
  • Submit a decision within four days of receipt of the completed reviews

Editor-in-Chief Criteria 

The Editor-in-Chief of the JOM shall:

  • Be an active researcher
  • Have a strong publication record of 10 or more peer-reviewed articles
  • Have senior or corresponding authorship publications
  • Have room in their professional responsibilities to accommodate handling multiple manuscripts per month
  • Have reliable internet access to conduct editorial duties in a timely manner
  • Fully support JOM’s commitment to publishing ethics and ensure that the Journal remains compliant with the expectations set forth by the Committee on Publishing Ethics, Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association, International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, Directory of Open Access Journals, and the World Association of Medical Editors
  • Work with the Journal Manager to make suggestions to the Board of Directors for improvement to the Journal's operations
